Background of the study
Export performance in the service industry is critical for diversifying Nigeria’s economy and enhancing its global competitiveness. In Abuja, state-level initiatives introduced between 2000 and 2020 have focused on improving service exports through regulatory reforms, infrastructure enhancements, and promotional programs. These initiatives target sectors such as information technology, financial services, and tourism, aiming to increase export volumes and improve service quality (Ibrahim, 2023). Determinants such as technological adoption, market access, and policy support play pivotal roles in influencing export performance. Empirical research indicates that when state-level policies are well-aligned with global market trends, service industries can experience significant growth and increased competitiveness (Oluwaseun, 2023). However, challenges including inadequate market intelligence, infrastructural deficits, and regulatory inconsistencies continue to hinder optimal export performance (Chinwe, 2024). This study examines the determinants that drive export performance in Nigeria’s service industry in Abuja, offering insights into policy improvements that can foster higher export competitiveness.

Statement of the problem
Despite targeted initiatives, export performance in Abuja’s service industry remains below expectations due to challenges such as regulatory inconsistencies, insufficient technological support, and poor market intelligence (Ibrahim, 2023; Chinwe, 2024). These issues result in missed opportunities for enhancing global competitiveness and achieving sustainable economic growth. This study aims to identify the key determinants that hinder export performance and propose measures to overcome these barriers.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the determinants influencing export performance in the service industry.
  2. To identify challenges faced by service exporters.
  3. To recommend policy measures to boost export competitiveness.

Research questions:

  1. What factors determine export performance in Abuja’s service industry?
  2. What challenges limit service export growth?
  3. How can policy interventions enhance export performance?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Technological adoption positively influences export performance.
  2. Regulatory inconsistencies negatively impact service exports.
  3. Enhanced market intelligence improves export competitiveness.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the determinants of export performance in Nigeria’s service industry in Abuja. The findings will help policymakers refine state-level initiatives to boost service exports, thereby contributing to economic diversification and improved global competitiveness (Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining export performance in the service industry in Abuja, focusing on determinants such as technology, regulation, and market access.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Export Performance: The effectiveness of a country’s service exports in global markets.
  2. Service Industry: Economic activities involving intangible goods and services.
  3. Market Intelligence: The information used to understand market dynamics and trends.
